Field Report: Delivering Warmth and Hope in Nepal
Six hours over unpaved, landslide-damaged mountain roads to reach three remote distribution sites. That was the journey today for UNITED SIKHS volunteers Naina Kaur and Komal Kaur as they led relief operations in the flood-impacted hills of Nepal.
When torrential rains hit earlier this season, sudden flash flooding and mudslides completely reshaped entire valleys. Historic market areas were erased. Farmlands were swept away, and shifting rivers cut straight through residential communities, taking homes and land with them. In one village area alone, out of 261 residents, only 11 remain in the aftermath.
Survivors are currently sheltering in temporary tin structures and blue tarps along the hillsides. With Himalayan winter temperatures fast approaching, the need for immediate, cold-weather gear is urgent.
Ground-Level Action: Sourcing and Reconnecting Communities
Rather than waiting for international shipments to navigate customs, our partners at UNITED SIKHS are procuring supplies directly within Nepal and delivering them directly to families.
In addition to bringing essential supplies, the team on the ground recently completed construction of a new footbridge, reconnecting families across flooded riverbeds so they can safely travel and rebuild daily life. Seeing women leaders like Naina Kaur and Komal Kaur spearheading this seva (selfless service) under extraordinarily difficult conditions reflects the deep resilience driving this effort.
Progress Update: 140 Backpacks Funded
In response to this crisis, KPC Buddhist Relief launched the Share the Love Campaign for Nepal to help fund 800 to 1,000 Winter Relief Backpack Kits.
Thanks to the swift generosity of our community, as of October 20th, we have funded 140 complete backpack kits so far.
Every $45 kit provides an individual with a durable backpack packed with complete cold-weather essentials:
A heavy winter jacket
Thermal blanket and shawl
Joggers and warm socks
Hot water bottle and insulated flask
Helping Us Help the Frontlines
Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo summarized our purpose in backing this joint effort:
"We are trying to help the Sikhs in their enormous and fruitful effort to get help to these devastated people in Nepal. Please help us help the Sikhs.”
By standing shoulder-to-shoulder with partners who are already embedded on the ground, every dollar raised moves instantly from donor support to direct relief in the hands of a family waiting in the cold.
Our goal is to reach 1,000 kits before the severe cold sets in. Whether you sponsor one kit for $45 or share this update with others, your support directly fuels this vital work on the frontlines.
