The Need is Even Greater
Looking back on a season of generosity
As we welcome spring, we’re reflecting on the care and generosity that carried us through the winter.
Volunteers delivered food items to Miriam's Kitchen shortly after New Year's on Friday, January 3rd. After the delivery, they spoke with Chef Cheryl, who was happy and grateful to see them. They asked her what she had cooked for Christmas Day and New Year’s.
For Christmas, she prepared honey-glazed hams with macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and dill rolls, serving 170 guests. For New Year’s, she cooked Peruvian chickens with Spanish rice, string beans, and garlic bread. When asked what was next on the menu, she shared:
“Chicken with blistered tomatoes, and I put tarragon in it. And then we're doing a vegetarian option where I'm cooking farro for the grain, and then doing it with spinach and red onions and a pesto sauce that will be mixed in with the farro, so we can have a really nice, hearty vegetarian option.”
Every day, from-scratch, five-star restaurant-quality meals are prepared for clients without homes. Food is the gateway to vital services and eventually to helping individuals get off the streets. Providing dignified meals uplifts those who are suffering with care, respect, kindness, and trust-building—the skillful actions that help people start over.
Miriam’s Kitchen staff and volunteers show up day in and day out for the most vulnerable, fighting on their behalf. The KPC Buddhist Relief team, directed down to the smallest detail by CEO Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo, is humbled and honored to play a small part in the mission and success of our partner, Miriam’s Kitchen.
