Honey, Coffee, and Coats ... Gifts from Jetsunma to our African Community

In the past week, KPC has been abuzz with activity, inspired by Jetsunma’s call to expand our generosity and help those suffering from food insecurity and lack of warm clothing.

We’ve been working closely with the West African refugee community, led by their extraordinary volunteer coordinator, Mariama Sy. Mariama, a translator and caretaker for seniors and disabled children, tirelessly supports over 300 refugees arriving in Maryland. Her dedication and radiant compassion are truly remarkable.

A year ago, Mariama reached out for help securing coats during winter’s coldest weeks. Since then, KPC has supported the community with monthly food distributions, baby carriers, clothing, hot meals on cold nights, and even fundraising efforts after one of our dear Senegalese friends had a severe accident. Over time, this partnership has deepened into a true family connection.

This winter, Jetsunma asked us to continue providing food and clothing for our “new family.” She has had us making fresh and delicious soups every night for families, complete with fresh fruit and French baguettes. Last evening, with shopping help from Skip, Jacob, Rudy, and Anne K, we delivered to them Jetsunma's gifts of honey and Taster’s Choice instant coffee—favorites among the refugees—along with bags of winter coats.

Mariama’s joy was palpable. She exclaimed that earlier in the evening, she’d met a newly arrived refugee without a coat and was amazed the need was already met. Overcome with gratitude, she laughed, danced, and immediately called others to share the news! All were excited and I heard many "Merci Jetsunma!" and "Merci KPC!” for all we’re giving.

Mariama often reflects on Jetsunma’s boundless generosity, marveling at the unconditional love shown to people of different cultures, races, and religions.

In her words:

“Who does this? Who opens their hearts and gives freely to people they don’t know? Of different cultures, different races, different religions? Who does this? JETSUNMA! The Mother of the refugees!”

These simple gifts—honey, coffee, and coats—become profound offerings when given with true love and compassion. The gratitude and joy we receive in return are gifts in themselves, reminding us of the transformative power of kindness.

Jetsunma’s teachings always encourage us to dig deeper, and expand our hearts and generosity. Every act of compassion, no matter how small, has the power to change lives—and in doing so, changes us as well.
